Welcome to the Millard Sheets Art Resource Website.
The mural from the old terminal at the San Jose airport has been reinstalled in the new terminal between the Doemstic and International terminals and looks great. I did the final touching up last month. I will post an image soon. To see the story click on link and search for Millard Sheets: www.mercurynews.com
I just received the go ahead to remove the MS mural from the old Travis Savings and Loan in San Antonio, Texas. The new owners of the building want to donate it to an organization in Texas. It portrays the Battle of the Alamo and the death of Travis. It is a wonderful mural and Dad did a self portrait on one of the soldiers as I remember.
Lots of new happenings in the art world of Millard Sheets. The artworks in the many buildings he designed are taking on a new life and interest. One of the current problems lies in the ageing of the buildings themselves. Some of the banks have failed or were taken over and sit empty. Others were build prior to earthquake standards which exist today. Retrofitting an older building is extremely costly and often requires vacating or closing for business. However, Most of the artworks themselves can be removed for safe keeping and reinstallation elsewhere. I will be updating these happenings after the Holidays. Meanwhile, please remember to send images and stories about any artworks by MS you may own or have contact with.
The Tournament mural from the Pasadena Home Savings will be presented to the City of Pasadena for installation in a prominate location in 2011. Refurbishing the faded wood it is painted on is under way but it is a slow process. We will announce an unvailing date when it is set. Stay tuned.
I am now working closely with Chase Bank as a consultant to protect and preserve the artworks by my Father and the many other artists who worked with him doing the Home Savings buildings. I am also involved in researching works that he did in other states which now sit in empty buildings to make sure they don't disappear. If anyone who reads this has any information about them please email me.
Two books you should know about and can purchase.
My sister, Carolyn Sheets Owen-Towle has written the memoirs of our Father in a wonderful book entitled "Damngougous." A must read about an incredible man.
Also the book from the recent Pasadena exhibit of "The Early Years" by Gordon McClelland is a rich history and well documented reproductions of Dad's work.
Both are available at;

As the son of Millard Sheets and the executor of his estate I am contacted every day by people wanting information about his past works. One of the purposes of this site is to share those communications so that others may benefit from that information. Nothing shared in confidence will ever appear on the site. This will be an open forum with links to other such sites, where a broader picture of the man and his history can be found.
Thank you for your interest Millard Sheets.
Sincerely,
Tony Sheets

This is a portion of the mural by Millard which was painted over laqst year in the West Portal branch of a Home Savings Bank. I found that it had disappeared while checking on a sculpture of mine at the same branch. This unfortunate loss of this mural is what has actually led to the care and protection of all of the original artworks which Chase Bank now owns. They are dedicatied to not letting this happen again and I am working in close contact with them.
